Psychoanalytic and Femisnist Theories in A Farewall to...

â€Å"A Farewell to Arms† written by Ernest Hemingway in 1929 attracted much critical acclaim and theoretical interpretation helping to understand the author’s message to the readers the overall importance of the literary work in the world. The events of the novel took place during the First World War in Italy revolving around Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver working for the Italian Army and being wounded on the front. Another very important character in the novel was Catherine Barkley, the nurse taking care of Frederic while he was in the hospital in Milan. They soon becomed involved in a romantic relationship. Henry loved Catherine greatly using unique words and phrases to describe her hair, behavior, and his feelings. Ernest Hemingway succeeded to tell the story of a disillusioned man affected by love and war equally and sharing controversial feelings and ideas towards the war. On the one hand, the war ruined the life of people and killed the great number of them, but on the other hand, the war helped him to meet Catherine, the woman he loved and respected very much. Catherine helped Frederic to understand the real values and important things in life, such as love, family, respect, trust, etc. Frederic started a new life with Catherine forgetting about the challenges and threats of war and hoping to become a better person believing in a happier and more productive future. In the beginning of the book, Frederic was depicted as a lonely, confused individual unable to find happiness and overcome the challenges of war, and Catherine really helped him to find his place and meaning in life. The book was centered on the love affair between Catherine and Frederic showing that the war could destruct places and kill individuals but it could not ruin real feelings and love between people.
